CC Cyclones Women (6) vs Canterbury Eagles (1)

This game started out very evenly, both teams well matched and determined to play well. The game see sawed back and forth played predominantly in the middle ground with few forays penetrating either defence. Both teams had 3 shots on with Cyclones in the form of Mel, scoring first blood at the very end of the period. While we played well, we needed to step up another notch and to tighten our plays and really take a hold of the game.

The second period was not one of our best; some disorganisation on the bench and sustained pressure from the Eagles saw us with few opportunities to score. This let to their breakthrough when they tied the game at the end of the second 1:1.

After some stern talking to, the team knuckled down and went out for the beginning of the third with determination in their hearts. Kath led the way by putting the team one up, quickly followed by Chris off Annelie and again by Mel from Jayne. Annelie scored again for our 5th goal and in the dying minutes of the period Mel scored the 6th from a lovely pass from Jayne. We had a magnificent 15 shots in the last period for 5 goals and the team celebrated a very deserved and hard fought win.

We sometimes lose our way in the game, becoming distracted from the purpose of our coming together – to play the game as a team. We need to stay focused and play together in order to achieve our goals because when we do we are awesome. Of particular note in this game, Sharnita shone as our best defence – clearing the zone and taking the play to the opposition by taking the puck forward and having a shot or making a good pass before returning to her position. Sharnita is well deserved as MVP for this game.
